Universal Kids

Halloween Network Package

Universal Kids asked us to produce a spook-tacular and lighthearted custom motion graphics toolkit for their festive Halloween programming this October. They were looking for something that was original, warm, friendly, and that would feel natural alongside their IP characters.

"Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds."

Challenges

Halloween is a magical holiday, so we aimed to capture that wonder through a child’s imagination. We needed to create original characters, bumpers, and 5 IDs that would feel natural alongside their established look.

Solution

The concept we brought to life is defined by expression in children’s drawings, with a focus on basic shapes and loose, playful line work. We developed a unique style combining illustrations with photo-realistic backgrounds. To bring it all to life, we created a cast of kid-friendly monsters—carefully designed to complement, not clash with, characters from Universal Kids’ existing lineup.

SOLUTION

A limited color palette, 2 all-caps typefaces, and abstracted, 3D interpretations of the network logo serve as the cornerstones of Defy’s brand identity. The motion language of the network is snappy and dynamic, but with a subtlety that pulls you in and guides your attention to the shows’ content.

Toolkit

In the end, we delivered a comprehensive toolkit including 3 bumpers, 5 IDs, and a range of Photoshop assets. We built in extra flexibility, allowing the client to easily use a plug-and-play After Effects template. This approach boosted cross-promotion, audience engagement, and overall usability.

Process

A project of this scale required extensive ideation and exploration before reaching the finish line. In the following sections, we’ll share a glimpse into our process—from kickoff to completion, highlighting character studies, art direction, logo development, and early concepts to show how our ideas took shape.

All in the imagination

The final concept, All In The Imagination, was inspired by the playful creativity of children's drawings including simple shapes and loose, expressive lines. We began by imagining what Halloween monsters might look like through a child’s eyes, aiming to capture their innocence and imagination.

Character Studies

From our initial monster sketches, we worked with the client to select five favorites. We then brought them to life in full color and texture, each with its own unique style and personality—all designed to capture a sense of childlike playfulness and innocence.

Costume creation

We then dove into how the monsters would look wearing various Halloween costumes. We wanted to explore both stereotypical monster tropes and also some costumes inspired by the Universal Kids IP characters. The results of this exploration are shown below.

Art Direction

To bring this style to life, we composited our illustrated monsters into photographic backgrounds that felt kid-friendly and subtly detailed to keep the focus on the characters. The ideal backgrounds needed to feel lived-in but tidy, offer depth and space for interaction, and leave room for Halloween decorations and type. Here's a look at our exploration and how stock imagery shaped the final result.

PROCESS

Building a new network takes a lot, so we’re sharing a glimpse into our visual and conceptual process. Below, you'll see early explorations in typography, color, and art direction that shaped our direction.

logo development

The Universal Kids logo is fun and iconic, so for this Halloween toolkit, we created a spooky twist that still kept its playful, round shape. To match our monster theme, we designed a version that fit seamlessly with the new characters. Below, you can see the design process and the final furry result.

Come and play

Alongside the main logo, we created a secondary “Come Play” lockup for use in the IDs. It needed to include the Universal Kids logo and fit a more specific use—appearing as if carved into a pumpkin being decorated by our monster characters.

initial concept: Playing with Paper

Before arriving at the direction we took with All In The Imagination, there were two additional concepts that we explored for this project: In this one, Playing with Paper, we took a more refined approach to arts and crafts, using cut paper to materialize the curiosity within a child’s mind.

initial concept: Mixed commotion

Our second concept, Mixed Commotion, focused on classic Halloween icons and how to simplify and transform them into playful visuals. We explored circular transitions between icons as a core idea, originally aiming for a childlike illustrated style. As the concept evolved, we looked for ways to add more visual interest while keeping the transitions central to the look.

More exploration

We moved beyond a purely illustrative style by blending 2D and 3D mixed media to bring spooky elements to life. The Universal Kids logo was reimagined in various shapes and characters, each reflecting a different Halloween mood such as cute, creepy, silly, and more. This concept progressed further in development, allowing us to expand on our vision for the logo, IDs, and end pages.

Challenges + Solutions

Animated sequences of photos and documents were created to convey information and visually connect the investigative dots of the narrative. It was imperative that these graphics felt realistic and authentic to the story being told.

Title Sequence

The title design needed to be simple, clean, and focusing solely on the men whose lives were irrevocably impacted. MAMMAL adopted a minimalist approach, emphasizing emotional resonance by switching between old family photos to their mugshots. Similar to the document and photo sequences, the use of paper textures grounded the visuals, creating a raw and tangible connection to their stories.
